Splenda packets are 99% High Fructose Corn Syrup!?

I don't use Splenda, but in my latest Mercola newsletter he talked a bit about it. And THANK GOD I don't use it!

Seriously... O...M...G...

Splenda studies were done on pure sucralose, NOT on the little packets that everyone uses. Since sucralose is 600 times sweeter than sugar, they have to use bulking agents to manage the sweetness. Those bulking agents are dextrose and maltodextrin, which come from high fructose corn syrup (pure sugar). And not just a little bit... Since sucralose is SOOOOOO sweet, 99% of the powder in those little Splenda packets is bulking agent.

And the lovely loophole in the law says if there is less than 1 gram per serving, they don't have to claim calories and can put 0 calories when in reality there are 4 calories per packet.

I'll say it again...

99% of your Splenda packet is PURE SUGAR.

Hey there, I picked up your blog here by visiting another web site that we both used to frequent (BW). You may recognize me by the *, lol! I just wanted to say that since reading your blog I have learned so much and have already started incorporating green changes into my home. Started with household cleaners (switched to Natrics) and hand soap (Method). LOVE the egg info, had been looking into that myself! You're doing a good thing here~thanks!*

So glad you're enjoying my site!!! I found myself extremely frustrated at first... I had to tell myself to slow down and change one thing at a time or I'd go insane. This has worked well though.

And yes, :) I definitely know who you are!!! So happy to hear from you! -Jennifer

i can't even tell you how devastating this is to me. for lent, i gave up hfcs. i've been trying so hard to check all my labels. i thought splenda was "safe" and i use one packet in my morning coffee. it just goes to show you how ubiquitous this stuff is.

I did a Google search for those two ingredients and didn't find any info that says they are made from high fructose corn syrup. Just saw that one came from corn, but nothing more specific. I'll have to do more digging, but it does bother me that they deceive people so blatently. 99% isn't even sucralose! :-( Glad you enjoyed my blog!

I noticed this article today about Equal taking Spenda to court about the whole bit about Spenda coming from sugar. They don't mention the part about the packets containing high fructose corn syrup, but Equal attacks them for conning people into believing it's "natural" and made from sugar. Well... it is made from sugar in part through a chemical process that burns the sugar out.

I tend to agree with the Equal suit that claims that many people believe Spenda is simply a bi-product of surgar and very natural.

However, in a law suit, I would side with Spenda, because it technically is "made from sugar" and it's slightly our fault for not being educated and reading more about it. Like many products, we tend to believe the ads first.
